🌙 Understanding Your Baby’s Sleep: What New Parents Should Know

A baby’s sleep pattern is very different from that of an adult. During the first few weeks of life, newborns usually sleep throughout both the day and night and wake frequently for feeding. Their sleep schedule is not yet controlled by a fully developed circadian rhythm.

During the first couple of weeks, newborns may sleep around 16–18 hours per day, although sleep is divided into many short periods. As babies grow, their sleep gradually becomes more organized, and they begin developing a clearer difference between daytime and nighttime.

Frequent waking is completely normal during early infancy. Babies have small stomachs and need regular feeding, which is one reason they naturally wake throughout the night.

Creating a comfortable sleep environment can make bedtime more peaceful. Soft, comfortable baby clothing, an appropriate sleeping space, and a consistent bedtime routine can help parents create a calm atmosphere.

Parents should also pay attention to safe-sleep practices. Babies are particularly vulnerable during sleep, so creating a safe sleeping environment is an important part of newborn care.

Every baby develops differently, so there is no single sleep schedule that works for every family. Understanding your baby's natural rhythm can help make those early months a little easier.

Because every little dream deserves a peaceful beginning.
